Earlier this week, Tyra Mae Steele, real name Tamyra Mensah-Stock, the Olympic gold medalist-turned-WWE superstar, tweeted about winning $350,000 at an amateur wrestling event and being fired by WWE. This prompted multiple wrestling websites to report her departure, and fans rallied in her support, sharing words of encouragement. However, she was actually talking about a dream she had, which got miscommunicated due to a poor choice of words. And now she has clarified her employment status, tweeting, “Trust me, I’m not going anywhere for a long time.”
33-year-old Steele enjoyed a remarkable amateur freestyle wrestling career in the women’s 68 kg division for the United States, making history at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by becoming the first Black woman and second U.S. woman overall to win Olympic wrestling gold, dedicating it to her late father. Her accolades also include 2019 World Championships gold, 2019 Pan American Games gold, multiple Pan American Championships titles, and three Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix wins. Yet right now, her focus is on pro wrestling, having signed with WWE, where she is currently part of their EVOLVE brand.
